HIS ANOINTING
SERIES THE PRIEST AND HIS GARMENTS. LESSON 5.
SPICES FOR ANOINTING OIL.
Typical of the various works of the Holy Spirit in the believer's life, and
speaks of the deepening work of the Holy Spirit.
1. This oil was used for the Anointing of the Priests, Ex.29:7 and for the
anointing of the Tabernacle itself, Ark, Table and all its vessels,
Candlestick and its vessels, Altar of Incense, Brazen Altar with all its
vessels, Laver, Ex.30:26-28, 40:9-15.
2. The purpose for this anointing was to sanctify the Priest that they may
be most Holy. Ex.30:29. There is a sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit
needed in the church to make her presentable as a Bride for Jesus.
3. There were 5 ingredients that made up this Anointing Oil and each
ingredient represents a certain work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of
God's Holy Priesthood of which His church is.
(a) Pure Myrrh, (b) Sweet Cinnamon (c) Sweet Calamus (d) Cassia
(e) Olive Oil.
(A) Pure Myrrh. Type of suffering. This speaks of the Holy Spirit
leading us through bitter experiences to deepen us and make us more
fragrant and perfect.
(i) Myrrh is a gum from a thorny foliage. It is a healing
stimulant. It is very bitter yet fragrant.
(ii) Speaks of suffering (bitter experiences which the Holy
Spirit, leads us into and through to perfect us that
our life may become fragrant). The Holy Spirit also
comforts and heals after a bitter experience even as
myrrh is a healing stimulant.
(iii) Just as Myrrh is only one ingredient of the anointing
oil, so this is only one of the works of the Holy
Spirit to lead us through suffering.
(iv) Oil of Myrrh used to prepare Esther to be presented as
Queen to the King. Est.2:12, so the Holy Spirit pre-
pares the Church to become the bride of the King by
using Myrrh (suffering). Christ learnt obedience by
the things which He suffered.
(v) Three gifts brought to the babe Christ. Gold
(prophetical of Jesus revealing the Righteousness,
Deity, Purity of God to this world in His earthly
ministry).
Frankincense (prophetical of Christ's prayer life, His
constant touch and communion with His Father). Myrrh
(prophetical of His suffering that He would experience
at the end of His ministry. Matt.2:11).
(B) Sweet Cinnamon. Used to entice, allure, attract, this is a type of
the Holy Spirit's work of enticing, alluring, attracting men and
women to Jesus through us.
(i) Comes from the inner bark of a tree and has a sweet
fragrance.
(ii) Not much is said in the scripture about Cinnamon, but
in Prov. 7:17, the Devil uses Cinnamon as a counterfeit
of the genuine. A harlot perfuming her bed with
Cinnamon to allure and entice the passer-by for the
purpose of making love.
(iii) The purpose of the sweet attractiveness of the Holy
Spirit is to allure men and women to Christ that they
may make love to Him. (Salvation)
(iv) Sweet Cinnamon also speaks of the Holy Spirit leading
us into the secret place or intimate communion and
fellowship with Christ.
(v) Song of Sol.4:12-14 is a type of Christ and His Church.
Here Christ adores His bride and says of her she is a
garden enclosed Cinnamon was in the garden - and speaks
of that which made her alluring and attractive,
fragrant to her beloved (Christ).
(c) Sweet Calamus. (Reed). Type of the Holy Spirit's work of measuring
the believer and bringing him up to the standard of Christ.
(i) A fragrant reed or cane whose roots are highly prized as a
spice. Used for medicine for stomach disorder.
(ii) Calamus is the same word for Reed in Rev.11:1, the measuring
reed or rod to measure the Temple. Here we see that one of
the works of the Holy Spirit is to measure us and bring us up
to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. The
Holy Spirit will do this through the 5 ministries as well as
convicting us of our short-comings in our daily walk as we
allow Him to.
(D) Cassia. Type of the Holy Spirit's work of liberating and breaking every
yoke.
(i) Cassia is a similar ingredient to the sweet Cinnamon. Pulp
made from the pods of the Cassia - Laxative in medicine.
(ii) The Kings (Christ's) garments smell of ... Cassia ... a sweet
fragrance. Also likened to the spiritual significance of
Sweet Cinnamon showing that Christ is alluring and attractive
to the Church.
(iii) A laxative medicine - speaks of the power of the Holy Ghost
to set free - loosen, liberate from all bondage. The
anointing shall break the yoke.
(E) Olive Oil. Type of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. The experience
of Joy, Life, Liberty, Enthusiasm.
(i) Was used for the light and daily sacrifices, Ex.27:20,
Lev.24:2.
(ii) Here we have 4 ingredients added to this one. The 4
ingredients are likened to the hidden work of the Holy Spirit
in the believers life, to sanctity and make him Holy and
separated unto the Lord. The Olive Oil has to do with light
- that which can be seen .... outward manifestation of the
